As you have probably already heard, we are planning to host an Anime Kaigi 2011. Unfortunately we have still not been able to confirm a date for next year's event. We ran into several difficulties post-con this year, but we've overcome the majority of them.
We actually have 'tentatively confirmed' our date with the du Bois Center, but we can't quite announce this date until it is official. Here's what we know and can share with you so far:
- We will not be able to afford moving to the only other convention center in town (that's large enough for Anime Kaigi). It would simply cost WAY too much! (at least 6x-7x what we would pay for the current convention center).
- Unfortunately, we won't be able to get a date that is outside of summer, while still having access to the meeting rooms that we need for the convention (a few of the major rooms are not available during the school year).
- The Cardinals have training for the last 6 weeks or so of summer, and they use up a few of the critical rooms also.
- We would like to avoid scheduling anywhere near PCC next year, so that eliminates a good chunk of the beginning of summer as well.
- This leaves us with the hottest part of summer for Anime Kaigi, and the facility does not have air conditioning. We will be taking measures this year to cool down the Peaks (Vendor Hall) room, such as purchasing or renting portable A/C units. We may be able to get the blinds closed this year, and keep the large door open instead of the smaller one. We know how miserable it was in 2010, and we'd like to avoid that again.
- The GREAT news about having our convention around this time, is that it will not be conflicting with any other conventions in the immediate area. Our tentative dates land us on a weekend that is not shared by any other major conventions in the USA. Lastly, it will be much cooler in Flagstaff during our convention than it will be in any other part of the state.
All that being said, we will be able to confirm and announce the dates for Anime Kaigi 2011 within the next 30 days. In the meantime, we have already started planning the basics of the event, and we'll be starting the major plannning shortly. Stay tuned!
